Abstract:
The purpose of clinical outcomes assessment is well-recognized by allied health professionals, but several obstacles have impeded the conduct of such research in the allied health professions. Many professionals have difficulty in determining how to begin. To explore the research possibilities already available within the health care environment, a way to visualize and organize the potential variables is needed. In light of a taxonomy of patient outcomes, an effort is made here to summarize and portray the characteristics of the delivery system, the environmental and structural factors, and both patient and provider attributes. Many of these aspects of outcomes investigations are within the purview and capabilities of allied health professionals. Through a division of labor among the professions, a mosaic can be collectively created that validates what they do and the value they add to patient care. J Allied Health 1999; 28:240-246.

The Demographics and Practices of Art Therapists Working with Cancer Patients in the New York Metropolitan Area Bromberg, E. L.

Abstract:
As the medical community's awareness grows about the positive impact of the creative therapies on the physical and psychological well-being of cancer patients, art therapy programs are being implemented in many medical settings. This study's purpose was to create and administer a survey to determine the demographics, therapeutic techniques, materials, resources and theoretical orientations of art therapists working with cancer patients in the New York metropolitan area, and report and analyze the results. The sources used for this study represent four related fields of research. The study completed by Rauch and Elkins (1998) provided the latest data available, at the time of the study, on the national membership of the American Art Therapy Association. The research presented by Anand and Anand (1999), Breslow (1993), and Councill (1993) relates to the use of medical art therapy with cancer patients. The works of Gruber, Hall, Hersh, and Dubois (1988), and Speigel, Bloom, Kraemer, and Gottheil (1989) present scientific research that supports the efficacy of medical art therapy. And finally, the research by Green and Kvidahl (1989), Hopkins and Gullickson (1992), and Hopkins and Podolak (1983) provide data relevant to mail survey design.
