Welcome to the American Art Therapy Association

The American Art Therapy Association is an organization of diverse, engaged and creative professionals dedicated to the belief that the creative process involved in making art is healing and life enhancing. Our culture is one of inclusion of people from all backgrounds, open to new concepts and artistic expression that continues to expand the effectiveness of art as a healing therapy. We are rooted in the experience of those who began this field and honor their legacy.  

The Association serves its members and the general public by promoting standards of professional competence and developing and increasing knowledge in the field of art therapy. The Association represents more than 5,000 members and 36 State and Regional Chapters that conduct meetings and activities to promote art therapy on the local level.

Promoting the therapeutic use of art by:

Encouraging the highest quality of art therapy services to the public.

Facilitating communication among members and colleagues.

Supporting legislative efforts at the state and federal levels.

Disseminating information to the general public, art therapists, and related mental health professionals.

Recognizing excellence in clinical, professional, educational, and research activities.

ART THERAPY STUDIO FEATURED ON WVIZ APPLAUSE
Art Therapy Studio was highlighted in a segment on WVIZ's Applause program in January.  
Applause is an Emmy award-winning locally produced TV show that celebrates artists and cultural groups around Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. Many American Art Therapy Association members can be found through the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) locator service. Find a Credentialed Art Therapist, a special area of the Art Therapy Credentials Board's web site is designed to help you locate a credentialed art therapy professional in your area.

The Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) is a separately incorporated entity and is an independent credentialing body that creates and maintains standards associated with earning art therapy credentials:  Registered Art Therapist (ATR) and Board-Certified Art Therapist (ATC-BC).

National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day

The American Art Therapy Association is a champion-level sponsor of the National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day, an annual celebration to be held this year on May 6, 2010.

The federal sponsored Awareness Day is a day for everyone to promote positive development of infants, toddlers, children, and youth. Communities across the country will observe the day with events, youth demonstrations, and social networking campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and increase understanding of the mental health needs of children and their families.
